Winter Sun

Here comes the sun!

Here are my top tips for maintaining that summer glow this winter and how to avoid tell-tale “faking it” signs.

Moisturise! It may sound obvious but keeping your skin in good condition is crucial, especially in winter (click here for my best winter moisturisers). Be sure to pay extra attention to the hands, elbows, ankles, knees, and feet- any area that feels especially dry. Dry skin doesn’t respond well to self-tanner resulting in the classic patchy oompa-loompa rather than shining goddess.

Exfoliate! Giving your skin a well-deserved scrub will lift dead skin cells and sebum revealing the ready-to-bronze revitalised skin underneath. Applying fake tan to dry and uneven skin will help you achieve that unwanted mismatched jigsaw look.

Gloves or Mitt! Orange stained palms are never a good look and are a classic clue that you’ve been cheating. Try get into the habit of wearing a tanning mitt or latex gloves when applying fake tan. The idea may seem strange at first but will become second nature after a few uses. To apply tanner to the back of your hands (and avoid doing that awkward backwards hand rub) apply a small amount of tanner to a cotton wool pad and apply.

Routine! Once you’ve achieved your desired glow work out a tanning routine in order to maintain it. Gentle exfoliation and much more moisturising will keep skin silky smooth and ready to tan. If you’re feeling pale simply do a tan top up and voilà!

My top self-tanners:

Garnier Ambre Solaire No Streaks Self-Tanning Mousse, £9.33

Garnier Ambre Solaire

This mousse will leave you with a perfect streak-free tan without that classic cheap smell. Since it is made without oxygen application is soft and smooth and isn’t drying to the skin. To make things run smoother this self-tanner has a slight tint to make application easier. For under a tenner you’ll have everyone fooled.

Garnier Body, Summer-body Moisturising Lotion Sun-Kissed Look £5.30

 Garnier summerbody

For those who wish to have a more subtle yet noticeable winter glow, a gradual tan is perhaps a better option. This thick 2 in 1 moisture infused tanner leaves a warm honey glow after only 2-3 days of application. Enriched with chamomile moisture will last for up to 12 hours which is an added bonus for the cold winter months? With a fruity apricot scent and a streak-free finish no one will ever be able to tell you’re faking it.

St Tropez Self Tan Bronzing Mousse, £21.48St tropez bronzing mousse

This ultra-lightweight mousse is infused with aloe vera to deliver that silky-smooth, ultra-even, all-over tan you’ve always wanted. Formulated without parabens, sulfates, phthalates and triclosan skin isn’t dehydrated or damaged keeping your tan from going patchy. Innovative Aromaguard fragrance technology eliminates the tell-tale self-tan aroma by a minimum of 70% leaving a beautifully subtle, yet fresh fragrance. May be slightly more on the expensive side but for those who wish to have that perfect beach tan it’s worth every penny.

St Tropez Everyday Gradual Tan for Body, £12.15

Again for those who wish to have a more subtle glow gradual tan is the best answer, and here is my second favourite. St Tropez’s gradual tan cleverly combines skin care benefits with a healthy touch of bronze. Again like the bronzing mousse this lotion is infused with soothing aloe vera to give you smoother skin while building a gradual golden tan. The tan develops virtually scentless giving away no clues to your secret, a great beauty buy for this season.

Rimmel Instant Tan Matte, £6.12

For a winter tan that washes off instantly this is your best buy. Not only is it cheap but it works perfectly. No orange undertone, light fresh scent and an easy to blend texture make this fake tan a perfect purchase for a quick fix glow, whether it’s for a Christmas party or an office lunch you can’t go wrong.

Just follow the steps above for perfect application and a sun kissed look that’ll fool everyone this winter!
